Dave Sagan, director of the Hocking Woods Nature Center, poses with Alice, a Boa Constrictor. His affinity for snakes and extensive knowledge has earned him the nickname, “The Snake Guy.” Sagan, right, receives assistance from student volunteer Rex McBride in corralling Ginger, an unsocialized Burmese Python, in the basement of his Nelsonville home. Sagan works to control Ginger after having received a bite on his forearm during a handling session. Though the bite itself is painful pythons lack venom keeping handlers out of immediate danger. Franken-snake swallows a rat during a weekly feeding. Sagan named the black rat snake based on the large amounts of scar tissue covering its body. The scarring was caused by injuries incurred from the wire cage that the previous owner kept him in.

Snake Charmer

To many people, Dave Sagan is simply known as “The Snake Guy.” Sagan has earned this reputation based on his extensive knowledge regarding domestic and exotic snakes. This knowledge is shared with the residents of Southeastern Ohio through Sagan’s role as the director of the Hocking Valley Nature Center. The center is owned by Hocking College where Sagan also serves as an instructor.
